The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has provided therapeutic food to more than 475,000 children in Afghanistan this year as part of efforts to combat severe malnutrition, the organization announced.

The food, distributed through 3,300 service centers across the country, is designed to address acute malnutrition in young children.

“Rich in protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals, ready-to-use therapeutic food is a powerful solution in the fight against severe acute malnutrition,” UNICEF Afghanistan stated in a post on X.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2.9 million Afghan children under the age of five are facing malnutrition, with 850,000 suffering from severe acute malnutrition. The WHO has warned that food insecurity in Afghanistan is escalating into a widespread crisis.
