TTP & ISKP: The Ongoing Security Challenges of Afghanistan

As Afghanistan observes 45th anniversary of Soviet invasion, its history of resilience against foreign interventions is evident. However, the present challenges are more insidious, with internal & regional threats undermining its stability.

Terror groups like TTP & ISKP have become significant destabilizing forces, not only for Afghanistan but also for the region.

The Growing Menace of Terror Groups

The TTP & ISKP have exploited ungoverned spaces and porous borders of Afghanistan to launch attacks, particularly targeting Pakistan. A 2023 United Nations report revealed that over 30% of terrorist activities in Pakistan were planned or initiated from Afghan territory.

This trend calls for immediate measures to dismantle these networks before they further destabilize the region.

Pakistan’s Security Concerns

Pakistan has borne the brunt of cross-border terrorism emanating from Afghanistan. In 2024 alone, over 540 Pakistanis lost their lives to TTP-led attacks, a sharp 50% increase from the previous year.

Afghan territories near the border have become militant strongholds, creating significant challenges for Pakistan’s internal security and straining bilateral ties.

Afghanistan’s Credibility at Risk

The presence of terror groups on Afghan soil jeopardizes its standing as a responsible regional actor. Failing to address these threats risks further isolating Afghanistan internationally.

The nation’s credibility depends on its ability to curtail militancy and foster trust with neighboring countries and global stakeholders.

The Need for Regional Cooperation

To combat these threats, Afghanistan must strengthen its ties with regional powers. Collaborative mechanisms with Pakistan, such as joint border monitoring and intelligence-sharing, are essential to curb militant activities.

Broader regional cooperation involving China, Iran, and Central Asian states could create a united front against terrorism and organized crime, leveraging platforms like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
