Afghan Refugees in Pakistan: A Story of Shelter, Struggles & Support

For over four decades, Pakistan has stood as a refuge for millions of Afghan nationals displaced by conflict and instability. Hosting approximately 3.1 million Afghan refugees, Pakistan has shown unwavering support, opening its borders and communities to those in need despite facing its own economic and social challenges.

Shared Heritage

The majority of Afghan refugees in Pakistan are located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, regions that share historical, cultural, and linguistic ties with Afghanistan. Around 68% of these refugees live outside formal camps, integrating into local communities and contributing to the social fabric of their host areas.

This level of hospitality is a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to neighborly responsibility and shared humanity, despite the strain it places on local resources.

Beyond Shelter

Pakistan’s support goes beyond shelter. Afghan refugees have access to health, education, and community services, with local and international organizations working together to provide essential assistance. However, the resources needed to fully support this large population often fall short.

Out of the $383.7 million required to meet refugee needs, only $121.4 million has been received, reflecting a critical gap that affects the quality of services available. Despite this, Pakistan continues to shoulder the responsibility, advocating for increased global aid to sustain these efforts.

Over 4.4 million Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan voluntarily since 2002, thanks to Pakistan’s active role in facilitating safe repatriation. Yet, ongoing instability in Afghanistan makes this journey uncertain for many families, who must choose between staying in Pakistan or returning to a homeland still grappling with security challenges.

Pakistan’s Commitment to Afghan Refugees

Pakistan’s support for Afghan refugees is a story of resilience, generosity, and shared struggle. Despite limited resources, Pakistan has upheld its commitment to providing a safe haven for its Afghan neighbors. As the world watches, it is crucial for the international community to step up in support, sharing the responsibility and ensuring Afghan refugees have the means to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
