UN, Qatari Officials Discuss 4th Doha Meeting on Afghanistan

Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, met with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo. They discussed arrangements for the fourth Doha meeting on Afghanistan.

According to Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both parties stressed the importance of utilizing the positive outcomes from the third Doha meeting. Furthermore, they emphasized applying these results in the upcoming fourth meeting.

In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need to leverage the positive momentum created by the success of the third Doha Meeting of Special Envoys on Afghanistan. They also highlighted the importance of building on its outcomes in the upcoming fourth meeting in Doha.

“The three previous Doha meetings did not achieve tangible outcomes. They failed to shift engagement from a de facto framework to a de jure one. I hope this meeting can pave the way for the Islamic Emirate to transition from this stage,” Mohammad Omar Nehzat, a political analyst, told TOLOnews.

Key Discussion Points

The participants in the third Doha meeting discussed key issues. Specifically, these issues included support for Afghanistan’s private sector, combating narcotics, and ensuring alternative livelihoods for farmers.

Suhail Shaheen, head of the Islamic Emirate’s Political Office in Qatar, told TOLOnews that the Islamic Emirate will participate in the fourth Doha meeting. However, this participation depends on whether organizers share the agenda with them and meet their conditions.

The head of the Islamic Emirate’s Political Office in Qatar stated that organizers should share the agenda for the upcoming Doha meeting with the Islamic Emirate beforehand. He also urged them to consider their agenda as well. He expressed hope that this meeting will be fruitful and help resolve issues.

Qatar has been one of the influential countries in recent political developments in Afghanistan. It has hosted at least three international meetings with special representatives from different countries for Afghanistan under the auspices of the United Nations.

Organizers have not yet confirmed the exact date of the fourth Doha meeting, and the Islamic Emirate has not officially announced its participation. They expect to hold the fourth Doha meeting on Afghanistan before the end of this year.
