The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation has reported that seven Afghan prisoners freed from jails in Pakistan have been deported to Afghanistan.

The ministry stated on Wednesday, January 29 that these individuals were released after being detained for entering Pakistan without legal documents. After their arrest by Pakistani police from various parts of the country, they were transferred to prison.

According to the report, these newly released prisoners had been held in Pakistani jails for periods ranging from 4 months to 4 years.

The Afghan prisoners deported from Pakistan were transferred to Afghan authorities upon their arrival in the country.

This follows ongoing reports of Afghan citizens being arrested and deported from Pakistan for not having legal residency documents. Pakistani authorities have stated that this is the main reason for the arrests.

Recently, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that, in 2024, at least 1.4 million Afghan migrants returned from Iran and Pakistan to Afghanistan.

The United Nations has also expressed concern about the actions of Pakistani authorities in detaining and deporting Afghan refugees from parts of the country, stating that Pakistan has intensified its forced deportation of Afghan nationals in recent months.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges for Afghan migrants in neighboring countries. The lack of legal documentation remains a central issue, and the increasing deportations reflect the growing difficulty many Afghans face in securing stable and legal residency abroad.
