The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan has reported that, last year, it distributed educational materials to 3.5 million Afghan schoolchildren across the country.
This distribution of 3.5 million educational materials underscores role of UNICEF in supporting Afghan students amid ongoing challenges.
In a report released on Wednesday, February 19, UNICEF stated that the materials included pens, notebooks, textbooks, school bags, and other educational supplies.
UNICEF has consistently worked to assist the people of Afghanistan, implementing humanitarian programs to support orphaned children, provide food, and ensure education, all in an effort to improve their living conditions.

Earlier, UNICEF had also announced its support for 18,000 classrooms for both girls and boys across Afghanistan in the past year. According to the organization, in many remote areas of Afghanistan, both girls and boys are deprived of education due to schools being far away or classrooms being overcrowded.
According to UNICEF, Afghanistan faces an education crisis, with an estimated 4.2 million children out of school, of which 60% are girls. Despite challenges, initiatives like last year’s distribution aim to reduce the 43% literacy gap among Afghan youth. In 2024, UNICEF also provided training to over 10,000 teachers to enhance educational quality, focusing on remote provinces.
During the “Education Cannot Wait High-Level Financing Conference” in February 2024, Afghanistan received pledges totaling $150 million from international donors, reflecting global commitment to safeguarding Afghan children’s education. UNICEF’s efforts align with the Global Education 2030 Agenda, emphasizing inclusive learning environments despite restrictions.
While obstacles persist, especially for girls, UNICEF’s expanded community-based education programs aim to reach an additional 500,000 out-of-school children by 2025, ensuring that access to learning continues amidst adversity.
These actions demonstrate UNICEF’s commitment to improving the educational conditions for Afghanistan’s children and its ongoing efforts to create equal educational opportunities for all children, particularly in remote and crisis-affected areas. UNICEF also provides psychosocial support, safe learning spaces, and essential health services.
