The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed concern over the state of human rights in Afghanistan, noting that no progress has been made in this regard, according to its latest report.

The UNAMA report, released on Monday, January 27, titled “Human Rights Situation in Afghanistan,” covers the final three months of 2024—October, November, and December—and highlights ongoing human rights violations, particularly against women and girls.

The report documents systematic discrimination under the IEA, including restrictions on education, employment, and public participation for women and girls. It also points to harsher enforcement of discriminatory rules by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

UNAMA revealed that over 39,000 midwives and nurses were barred from continuing medical education following the IEA’s oral decree banning women from studying medicine. These actions have further marginalized women in Afghanistan.

UNAMA’s findings indicate ongoing violations, particularly against women and girls. The report emphasizes that systematic discrimination has led to their exclusion from various aspects of daily and public life, notably in education and employment. The enforcement of restrictive measures by the de facto authorities has exacerbated these challenges.

The report also detailed gender-based violence, including honor killings, early and forced marriages, sexual violence, domestic abuse, and suicides linked to such violence. UNAMA emphasized the severe impact of these violations on Afghanistan’s society.

These incidents underscore the deteriorating safety and rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.

UNAMA’s report underscores the deteriorating state of human rights in Afghanistan, particularly the widespread violations against women and the alarming rise in gender-based violence. These issues highlight the urgent need for international action to address these injustices.
