The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) has predicted that by 2060, one in two people in Afghanistan will live in cities.

The organization expressed concern over this issue and noted that many Afghan cities cannot handle rapid urban growth.

Part of the UN-Habitat statement reads: “In Afghanistan, 1 in 2 people will live in cities by 2060. Yet, many cities will not be ready for this rapid urbanization.”

Meanwhile, officials from the National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) said that more than 70% of the country’s citizens live in rural areas. They added that only 25% reside in cities.

“In 1403 Solar year, the country had a population of 35.9 million,” said Mohammad Halim Rafi, the spokesperson for the NSIA. “70% of the population lives in rural areas and villages. Meanwhile, 9.2 million people, accounting for 25.8%, make up the urban population.”

At the same time, some residents of the capital say that people need to observe urban culture.

“Living in the countryside differs from living in the city,” said Mohammad Aslam, a Kabul resident. “Those coming from provinces or districts to the city should dispose of waste in designated places. They should also help keep the city clean.”

“Anyone coming to the city should observe urban culture and collaborate in keeping the city clean,” said Shir Ahmad, another Kabul resident.
