Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and around the world are marking January 5 as Self-Determination Day, reaffirming their commitment to achieving freedom through a plebiscite promised by the United Nations.
As reported by Kashmir Media Service on Sunday, this day is observed to honor the United Nations Security Council resolution adopted on January 5, 1949, which upholds the Kashmiris’ right to determine their future through a UN-supervised plebiscite.
To emphasize the UN’s responsibility to implement its resolutions and alleviate the decades-long suffering of Kashmiris facing Indian oppression, various events such as rallies, seminars, and conferences are being organized globally.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has called upon the global community, especially the United Nations, to deliver on its pledge to allow Kashmiris to exercise their fundamental right to self-determination.
Their statement draws attention to the deteriorating situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K), where the BJP-led Indian government has escalated state-sponsored repression since August 5, 2019. Widespread detentions, economic challenges, and deprivation of basic rights have pushed the region into further turmoil.
The APHC has appealed to the international community to take urgent steps to stop the ongoing genocide of Kashmiris and compel India to resolve the dispute in line with UN resolutions.
