U.S. Lawmakers Call For Resumption Of Afghan Refugee Resettlement Program

Mike Lawler, a U.S. Congressman, has written a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to halt the decision to stop the Afghan resettlement program in the United States. Lawler warned that this decision could put the lives of over 200,000 Afghans who have worked with U.S. forces over the past 20 years at risk.

In his letter, Lawler expressed his strong opposition to the decision, stating that it not only undermines the United States’ moral commitment to its former allies, but also jeopardizes the lives of thousands of Afghans who are facing threats due to their cooperation with American forces. The program aimed to provide a safe refuge for these individuals who helped U.S. troops during the two-decade-long war in Afghanistan.

Lawler emphasized that many of these individuals continue to face serious security threats after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He argued that halting their resettlement could lead to disastrous consequences for them and their families. The cancellation of this program would essentially abandon those who risked their lives to support American forces during the conflict.

This request comes as the Trump administration has decided to end the CARE program, which was established to support and resettle at-risk Afghans. This decision has faced widespread criticism from U.S. lawmakers and human rights activists, who believe that the U.S. has an ethical responsibility to protect those who assisted American forces during the war.

The Afghan resettlement program (CARE) was launched after the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. The program aimed to provide housing, legal services, and financial support to Afghans who were at risk due to their cooperation with the U.S. military. Many U.S. lawmakers, particularly members of Congress, have voiced strong support for continuing this program, seeing it as an essential step in fulfilling America’s ethical and strategic commitments.

The decision to end the Afghan resettlement program raises serious concerns about the U.S. government’s commitment to those who helped during the conflict. The moral and humanitarian obligation to protect these individuals cannot be overlooked. It is crucial for the U.S. to honor its promises and ensure the safety of its Afghan allies.

It remains unclear whether the Trump administration will reconsider its decision, but similar requests continue to come from other congressional representatives and human rights organizations. The ongoing support for the resettlement program highlights the urgency of addressing the plight of those who risked everything to support U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
