U.S. officials have confirmed that Mohammad Sharifullah, the individual accused of being the mastermind behind the suicide attack at Kabul Airport in August 2021, has been transferred to the United States.
On Wednesday, March 5, U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director, Kash Patel, announced via X that Sharifullah was handed over to U.S. authorities at Dallas Air Base on Tuesday night. The transfer involved collaboration between the FBI, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the U.S. Department of Justice.
Sharifullah’s arrest came to light after U.S. President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s cooperation in the operation. In his speech to Congress, Trump mentioned that the operation was conducted with coordination between U.S. and Pakistani intelligence agencies.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Mohammad Sharifullah is an Afghan national who was captured during a special operation near the border between the two countries.
In response to Sharifullah’s arrest and transfer, Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the IEA, accused Pakistan of being a “main sanctuary for ISIS.”
Meanwhile, Hamidullah Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson of the IEA government, responded to the remarks of the Prime Minister of Pakistan regarding the arrest of Sharifullah, stating that these remarks themselves indicate that ISIS has sanctuaries and training centers in Pakistan.
The suicide bombing, which took place on August 26, 2021, near the Abbey Gate at Kabul Airport, resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. servicemen and over 170 Afghan civilians. The ISIS-Khorasan group claimed responsibility for the attack.
The coordination between U.S. and Pakistani intelligence are important. Nevertheless, the accusations from the IEA reflect the complex dynamics and strained relations between the involved parties. The broader implications of these actions on Afghanistan’s stability and security remain to be seen.
