Iran To Seal 1,000 Kilometers Border With Afghanistan

The Head of Engineering for the Iranian Armed Forces has announced that approximately 1,000 kilometers of border of Iran with Afghanistan will be closed. This decision was made to address security concerns and combat various illicit activities along the border.

Hossein Mousavi, the head of the Iranian Armed Forces Engineering Department, has announced that approximately 1,000 kilometers of the border between Iran and Afghanistan must be closed to prevent the entry of “terrorists” and drug trafficking.

On Saturday, March 1, During a ceremony honoring engineers and specialists of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces, Hossein Mousavi highlighted the importance of border security. He stated that engineering teams were brought in to address the issue and had achieved significant successes in this area.

Mousavi explained that the project to close the border will span an 8-year period, aiming to block smuggling and mitigate terrorist threats. The plan is designed to enhance national security by preventing illegal activities across the borders with Afghanistan.

He added that several kilometers of the Iran-Afghanistan border have already been reinforced with barriers. To date, over 30 kilometers of border wall have been installed, and another 50 kilometers are expected to be completed soon.

The project was launched last year under the directive of then-President Ebrahim Raisi, with a funding allocation of €3 billion. The goal is to fortify the borders with countries that have been hotspots for human and weapons trafficking, starting with the Afghanistan border. The comprehensive security measures will include fences, walls, and advanced monitoring systems.

The initiative to close and secure Iran’s border with Afghanistan is a key aspect of the country’s broader strategy to combat smuggling and terrorism.

The shared border between Iran and Afghanistan spans approximately 1000 kilometers, making it a significant focus of security measures. These developments come as part of Iran’s broader strategy to control its borders and mitigate potential threats.

Previously, Iranian officials had revealed that at least six million Afghan refugees currently reside in Iran, with two million of them living without legal documentation.
