Some residents of Herat have been forced to sell their household belongings due to economic hardship.

The Kandahar Gate market, located in the south of Herat city, witnesses hundreds of citizens daily selling their household items at low prices just to cover basic living expenses.

Some of these residents say that financial difficulties have made their lives extremely challenging, and they are in dire need of assistance.

Habibullah, a resident of Herat, said: “I have no choice but to sell my household items. I had land, but I sold it. I sold my house, and now I live in a rented home.”

Hedayatullah, another Herat resident, said about the economic hardship that: “Every day, hundreds, even thousands, of people come here to the Kandahar Gate area to sell their household belongings. They do this out of sheer desperation and poverty.”

Noor Mohammad, another resident of Herat, said: “Today, I brought a carpet to sell. Tomorrow, I will bring a prayer mat. The day after, a pressure cooker. Then another cooking pot, followed by a rug, and even the pillows from my house.”

The prices of second-hand household items in this market are extremely low. Sellers are left with no choice but to part with their belongings just to afford a few meals for their families.

Mubeen, a shopkeeper, said: “Most people sell their household items here out of necessity. These items have great value, but they are forced to sell them at incredibly low prices. We buy these goods and resell them to other citizens with a small profit margin.”

Ismail Mohammadi, another shopkeeper, said: “Every day, about ten to fifteen people come to us, selling household items they originally bought at high prices for a fraction of their original cost, simply due to financial difficulties.”

Although selling these belongings temporarily provides food for a few days, homes are gradually being emptied of furniture and essentials.

It remains uncertain how long this situation will continue, but Herat’s residents say that it is pushing them further into poverty every day.
