The Afghan Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of the interim government has announced that it has signed a contract worth over $1.056 million with the Danish Refugee Council.
On Monday, February 17, the ministry issued a statement confirming that the $1 million agreement was signed between Mawlawi Abdul Rahman Rashid, the Afghan Deputy Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, and Dania Al-Sharif, a representative of the Danish Refugee Council.
According to the statement, under the agreement, financial aid will be distributed to 298,556 returnees and internally displaced persons in the provinces of Kabul, Kandahar, Parwan, Zabul, Ghazni, Maidan Wardak, Kapisa, Herat, Badghis, Farah, and Kunar.

Previously, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) had also announced the allocation of $1.5 million to support returning refugees in Afghanistan.
According to international migration statistics (IOM), a total of 3.5 million Afghan migrants returned from Iran and Pakistan in 2024. Currently, around eight million Afghan citizens are still living abroad, particularly in Iran and Pakistan.
While the financial assistance and agreements with international organizations aim to support returnees and displaced individuals, the growing number of forced deportations has intensified humanitarian concerns. Without a sustainable reintegration plan and long-term support, the returnees may struggle to rebuild their lives, exacerbating economic and social instability in the country.
Addressing the crisis requires coordinated efforts among the stakeholders and host countries to ensure that returning refugees receive adequate resources, employment opportunities, and essential services for a dignified and stable reintegration into society.
